T
he Queen’s University Occupational Therapy Pro-
gram announces the retirement of Dr. Wendy Pent-
land on July 31, 2016. Wendy joined the faculty at
Queen’s in 1984 as a lecturer and proceeded to move up the
ranks. During her 32 year career at Queen’s, she focused her
scholarly efforts on understanding the relationships between
occupational balance, values and meaning and the application
of these concepts to health promotion and the enablement of
people to live personally meaningful, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Her work also addressed the social participation of people with
disabilities, including time use, aging and issues specific to
women with disabilities. Her teaching over the years included
courses on the Environmental Determinants of Occupation and
System-Level Communication, and supervision of many critical
enquiry projects. She also taught courses in Aging, and Disabil-
ity and Wellness in the Community for our Rehabilitation Sci-
ence (RHBS) program, and served as thesis supervisor for
students in the MSc and PhD programs. She recently com-

pleased to introduce and welcome Dr. Lynn Shaw
as our fourth Director. Her five year term is effec-
tive from August 15, 2016.
Dr. Shaw graduated from the University of Western On-
tario’s Department of Occupational Therapy with her
B.Sc.in
1984 and her
M.Sc.in 1998. She earned her Ph.D. from their
Department of Rehabilitation Science in 2005.
Dr. Shaw was most recently Vice-President Academic at
the Pacific Coast University for Work Place Health Science.
She has held faculty positions at the University of Western On-
tario in the Department of Occupational Therapy and at Mc-
Master University in the Department of Rehabilitation. She
currently holds adjunct faculty appointments with the Univer-
sity of Western Ontario and Vancouver Island University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Shaw has held various clinical
and leadership roles in occupational therapy practice that fo-
cused on work assessment and rehabilitation, orthopaedics,
mental health, home care, occupational rehabilitation and re-
turn to work in a variety of settings including the position of
Senior Specialist at Cami Automotive. She has held manage-
ment positions at Com-
care Health Services and
at the London Health
Sciences Centre.
Dr. Shaw also served
two terms as President
and one as Vice-Presi-
dent of the Canadian So-
ciety of Occupational
Scientists.
