WESTERN’S SCHOOL OF OT SAYS GOODBYE
TO TWO LONG-TERM FACULTY MEMBERS
T
his Summer and Fall the School of Occupational
Therapy at Western University is bringing appreci-
ation to two of our long-term faculty members,
who are entering the next phase of their journeys—retire-
ment. These individuals, Dr. Lilian Magalhaes and Prof. Ann
Bossers need no introduction to this community, however
by honoring them, we do want to reflect on their standing
and contributions. Both of them have served as exceptional
ambassadors for the profession of Occupational Therapy,
and lived as fountains of knowledge for the School of Occu-
pational Therapy, the field of Occupational Science (Magal-
haes) and the fieldwork education program (Bossers).
Specifically, Dr. Lilian Magalhaes is an Associate Profes-
sor in the School of Occupational Therapy at the University
of Western Ontario. Originally from Brazil, but having lived
in Canada for the last 15 years, her research interests focused
on emancipatory health practices, community engagement,
and mental health. Dr. Magalhaes has secured national and
international funding to support projects in investigating the
living and working conditions
of undocumented immigrant
workers in the Greater Toronto
Area. In these projects Dr. Ma-
galhaes applied innovative vi-
sual methods, which afforded
interesting venues to convey
the participants’ narratives of
precarious working conditions,
and resemblances of occupa-
tional injustices. Dr. Magalhaes
has been successful, internationally, in capacity building for
international research efforts in occupational therapy educa-
tion.
Prof. Ann Bossers has been an Associate Professor in the
School of Occupational Therapy for the past 30 years. Prof.
Bossers developed one of the first and most extensive inter-
national fieldwork education programs, a program that has
been touted as trend-setting in Canada and beyond. She also
pioneered competency-based fieldwork evaluation in occu-
pational therapy, providing the basis for the national compe-
tency frameworks of CAOT and ACOTRO. Prof. Bossers
brought together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to de-
velop the
Preceptor Education Program
, used by over 20,000
students and preceptors around the world. Ann is a builder
of community, and has served as coordinator of the school’s
alumni and homecoming events for many years. Her skill in
navigating complex environments and systems opened many
opportunities for students.
Those of us who have worked with these individuals are
very aware of the joys, priv-
ileges, and collegiality that
these partnerships embody.
Western’s School of OT
thanks both of these very
special
individuals—our
newest professors Emeriti--
for their outstanding service
over the years, and wishes
themwell with all of their fu-
ture plans!
